In 2013, filmmaker Iwan Schumacher began collecting photographs of couples who were not looking at the camera, either because they were familiar with the photographer or because they felt unobserved. Peter Pfrunder, director of the Swiss Photo Foundation, had long planned to make an exhibition of photographs of couples. They decided to team up, and that's how Paar / Couples was born .
The book shows pictures of couples in the broadest sense; the type and duration of the relationship play no role, nor does the gender of the person photographed. It shows pictures in which something happens between two people; a wide range of emotions can be seen and felt. Each photograph stands alone and sets a film in motion in the viewer's imagination, a before and an after, the fascinating speculation remains - the mystery of the picture remains.
Paar / Couples does not claim to be a selection of images that are representative of photo history or society. Rather, it is a score composed with great pleasure, put together by two lovers of the photographic image in free play: shots that each appear to come from a different film, but which can be edited together to form a new film.
